It is estimated that up to 20% of Americans have some kind of food intolerance. Intolerance to coffee is not so uncommon and can be manifested differently in each person. Allergy to coffee is less common, but not little ear. Reactions, whether of allergy or intolerance, may come from compounds in coffee or caffeine itself. Food intolerance, either by coffee or other things that are ingested, is often a delayed response to a compound in food. Allergies are immune reactions that usually cause the release of histamine. Caffeine intolerance: symptoms of coffee allergies There are more than 1,000 chemical compounds in coffee, including caffeine. It is impossible to identify the exact component of the coffee that causes intolerance. But there are some more common compounds that have been seen to be probably guilty. Coffee is high in histamine that can trigger what seems to be an allergic reaction but it does not occur through the typical allergy mechanism. Instead, coffee histamine causes an inflammatory reaction that can be quite severe in some people. Histamine can cause a variety of symptoms, many of which are left alone with symptoms related to intolerance or allergy to coffee, such as urticaria, rashes, shortness of breath, palpitations, abdominal pain and many more. Some people are more sensitive to the effects of histamine on food and many of them have a condition known as the activation syndrome of moretile cells, which itself can lead to an increase in the amount of histamine in the body. Coffee contains caffeine, which can cause reactions related to the effects of caffeine on the body. Typical symptoms caused by caffeine are jitteriness, heart racing and anxiety. These symptoms, however, may also be due to an allergic reaction to caffeine. In the case of allergy, there are often other additional signs of reaction, including abdominal pain, rashes, numbness and tingling, flu-like symptoms that could progress to anaphylaxia. But the truth is that the symptoms themselves do not always correlate with the type of reaction as there is so much overlap. Symptoms of coffee intolerance: Coffee intolerance or coffee allergy can result in a variety of symptoms such as: · Dolores or migraines· Skin rashes, hives and acne· Heart of racing or palpitations· Lack of breath· Sleeping· Dizziness· Subjecting· Anxiety· Numeration in hands and feet· Fatigue· Anaphylaxis· Abdominal pain and cramps· Congestion· ulcers of the mouth Some symptoms are due specifically to the effects of caffeine on the body. Genetically, we have enzymes that help us metabolize caffeine. Those who are poor metabolizers are more likely to have symptoms of caffeine excess, such as jiteriness, anxiety and palpitations. Some symptoms are related to an allergy or caffeine intolerance that comes from the body recognizing caffeine as a foreigner. The body then begins to attack caffeine and in doing so attacks, causing inflammation. This can lead to an allergic reaction and even in extreme cases, anaphylaxis. If the reaction is intolerance and not a true allergy, symptoms may still be very similar and may vary from mild to severe and may include non-specific symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Number of cups of coffee to drink per day I recommend to my patients to drink 1-2 cups of maximum coffee per day and often I do not recommend any as I treat sensitive patients who have a history of intolerance to many things. Ways to Reduce Caffeine Intake Typically, getting rid of coffee slowly for several weeks instead of cold turkey intake will result in less side effects, especially if you have been drinking a lot of coffee or caffeinated drinks. A trick that some of my patients have found useful is diluting their regular coffee with decaf coffee. In other words, start with 3/4 of a regular coffee cup and 1/4 of a decaflection cup and then with time decrease the amount of regular and increase the amount of decaf. Mycotoxins have also been found in Café to contain high levels of mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are toxins produced by fungi and moulds. We know that much of our food supply is contaminated with mold, especially dry foods, such as coffee and cereals. It has been shown that coffee contains a particular mycotoxin, known as ocretoxin, which is produced by a series of different molds that grow in coffee beans. Ocretoxin has been studied and has been found associated with kidney disease, cancer, and harmful effects in the brain. In addition to its dangerous effects on the body, mould and toxins can induce allergic reactions and intolerance.
